Chapter Thirteen

Mike

On Monday, following a weekend of sending wave after wave of bad luck toward Terry, I noticed Cindy taking her time preparing to leave class. She lingered, her eyes straying over to me every couple of seconds and I had to wonder if she was waiting for me but didn't want to say anything in front of Professor Morrison or anyone else.

I too took my time packing up my things too and murmured goodbye to Professor Morrison, telling her I'd see her later that afternoon. Once she was through the door, I approached Cindy. "Did you wish to speak to me?"

She nervously nodded. "Can we talk?" Her voice was soft and contrite.

I figured the two teacher chairs would be more comfortable than sitting at the student desks, so I gestured for her to take one of them while I took the other. She put her things down, but hesitated. It was like she feared speaking to me.

"What's wrong?" I asked softly.

"I… this is going to sound… bizarre… I know. But all this stuff has been happening and I just need to know." She frowned and wrang her hands as she spoke. "See, ever since that gift you were going to give me disappeared, Terry's been having all this horrible stuff happen to him, like his shoes falling apart, his X-box practically blowing up, him getting fired, fighting with his friends. Oh, and the car wreck and now he owes thousands of dollars… it's just…" She glanced up at me and looked into my eyes. "Are you doing this to him?" she asked softly.

I tilted my head and sighed. She was a smart girl and I suppose I knew she'd figure out something was up. "You could tell him, if he returns the gift that he stole from me, his run of bad luck will stop."

"Mike, what's going on? How can you know that? How is that possible?"

I got up and paced the room. I wasn't sure if she was ready to hear what all I really needed to tell her, but if I wanted to keep her in my life, I was going to have to come clean, tell her exactly who and what I was and what I could do. I moved to the classroom door and locked it.

"Mike, what are you doing? Why did you just lock us in here? What's going on?" She started sounding like she was about to go into a panic. She rose up from her seat and looked like she might try to dash out of the room at any second.

"I have something to tell you, but I don't want anyone else to overhear us or walk in on us." I moved back over to her and sat down, taking her hands as I encouraged her to sit back down as well. "I need you to make me a promise. To swear that you will not share what I'm about to tell you with anyone. Ever. It is extremely dangerous to me and to others if this knowledge gets out, so I need you to take this seriously, Cindy.
